New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced the constitution of seven empowered groups to deal with the potential long-term impact of the West Asia war, urging states to work with the Centre in a “Team India” approach to mitigate the crisis.

Flagging “serious side effects” of the conflict, Modi recalled the national response during COVID-19 when similar expert groups helped address challenges. He said the new groups will focus on key areas such as fuel, fertilisers, gas, supply chains and inflation, and devise both immediate and long-term strategies.

In a statement in the Rajya Sabha, Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only solutions for restoring peace in West Asia. He said India is in constant touch with all parties, including Iran, Israel and the United States, to push for de-escalation.

Acknowledging unprecedented challenges in the supply of crude oil, gas and fertilisers, Modi stressed that self-reliance remains the only viable long-term option. He also warned against black marketing and hoarding, directing states to take strict action. The Prime Minister said the government is sourcing crude and gas from all available avenues to shield citizens from the impact, while ensuring adequate fertiliser supply so farmers are not burdened. He added that an inter-ministerial group is already monitoring import-export disruptions.

Highlighting the global energy crisis triggered by the conflict, Modi urged citizens to remain prepared for uncertainties. He also emphasised that the safety of nearly one crore Indians in Gulf countries remains a priority, noting that about 3.75 lakh have returned safely so far, including 1,000 from Iran.

Calling for cooperative federalism, he urged states to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential commodities and timely delivery of benefits under welfare schemes, especially for the poor and migrant workers.

Modi said India is working diplomatically to ensure safe passage of ships and reopening of critical routes like the Strait of Hormuz, warning that prolonged conflict could have serious consequences.
